Hidden storage in a simply beautiful dining table set
Have you ever come across a storage unit that is contained within your dining table? We have seen several tables that have integrated storage units, but unfortunately, they have all had a bulky design that favors functionality over aesthetic. Designer Max Lamb has challenged this notion by creating a novelty design that has the same functionality with refined style. The Planks, furniture collection was developed for UK furniture brand Benchmark, with the intention to provide people with simple, functional, and durable furniture.
The minimalist design of this storage unit adds enough storage capacity for your tableware, which in turn frees up precious cupboard space in your kitchen. Working best in homes where there isn’t much cabinetry, or an extra dining room apart from the kitchen, this design feature will help maximize your space. The light colour of the wood gives it a subtle presence that suggests it will work in most rooms, regardless of the decor. This table can be purchased as a set which includes two benches that also have been designed to have hidden storage space –perfect for placemats, napkins or cutlery. The structure is held by L-shaped legs for both benches and the table, providing stability, as well as adding a visual layer of depth to the minimalistic design.
The simplicity of the minimalist design invites us to appreciate the quality of the product, in which we can vividly see the wooden grains of a Douglas Fir or Oak (depending on the preference of the type of wood, as it is available in both). These pieces have been finished in hard wax oil to preserve the natural look of the timber and add longevity to the product’s life. Moreover, The Planks Collection was awarded the 2016 WA (Wood Award) for “Outstanding design and craftsmanship”.
We had a tough time scoring the price of this unit. Because the design and quality of the unit are high, this invites the high price tag that comes with it. However, if you are searching for a quality piece from a renowned designer, The Plank collection can be exactly the type of furniture you have been looking for. Sold exclusively at Benchmark for 2,660 euros (about $3,000 USD), you might need to consider the shipping charges and contact the company prior making an order. With these caveats in mind, we have scored this item low on our value scale. With that being said, it could be argued that with the product’s design and quality specifications, the price is within reason; this, however, having a large shadow cast over it, as the price includes just the table. A far more reasonable deal would have seen two benches included with it. Perhaps once they ramp up the volume, we will see the price drop.
